Stromatolite Fossils For Sale

Stromatolites (meaning “layered-rock”) are accretionary structures created by single-celled microorganisms called cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). They are formed when sticky films of cyanobacteria trap and bind sedimentary grains. When the trapped sediment reacts to the calcium carbonate in the water, it becomes limestone. Stromatolites date back to more than 3.5 billion years ago and still can be found today in hypersaline lakes and marine logoons.
