Gontiatite Fossils For Sale

Goniatites (formally Goniatids) are an extinct group of Ammonoid cephalopods that appeared during the Mid Devonian (390 million years ago) and managed to survive the massive extinction at the end of the Devonian period. They flourished during the Carboniferous and Permian but unfortunately were wiped out in the Permian-Triassic extinction (also known as “The Great Dying” and “The Great Permian Extinction”) some 250 million years ago. 96% of marine animals went extinct in that event and it took the Earth 10 million years to recover. Goniatites make great index fossils as they were spread through the Earth’s oceans and can be found today in North America, Europe, North Africa and Australasia.
