Description

For sale is a wonderful example of the jaw-less, armored fish, Zascinaspis heintzi, from the Dniester region of Ukraine. It is preserved quite well considering location and age. As with most agnathan fish, only the dorsal shield is preserved. Fossilized fish this old are hard to find and must be handled with care as they are fragile. The shield itself is mostly intact, save for a few nicks here and there and the the surface is well defined. Zascinaspis belongs to Pteraspidomorphi, a class of extinct early jaw-less fish that existed between the late Cambrian and Late Devonian. This is an all-round good specimen and is 100% natural.

Pteraspidomorphi is an extinct class of early jawless fish. They are characterized by their large dermal head armor with dorsal, ventral or median shields or plates and lived close to the shore (such as lagoons and deltas) and some are thought to have lived in fresh water. Pterasidomorphs appeared during the late Cambrian and went extinct at the late Devonian. Most genera had a scaly tail with no other fins, giving them a somewhat tadpole look.
