Rare Black Globidens Mosasaur Tooth

$150.00

Description

For sale is an extremely rare piece; a Globidens mosasaur tooth from the Ouled Abdoun Basin (phosphate beds) in Morocco. Globidens teeth are relatively common in this formation, but what makes this one special is its unique color. It comes from a very scarce black layer in the phosphate beds which produce fossils with an unusual dark hue; hard to find for this region. Most fossils from the Ouled Abdoun Basin are medium to dark brown, black fossils are almost never seen.

There is a glued fracture on the tooth, other than that is it 100% natural.

Globidens is an extinct genus of mosasaur belonging to the family Mosasauridae that lived during the late Cretaceous (85 to 66 mya). The most characteristic feature of this mosasaur is its distinct, semicircular, globe-like teeth which the genus was named after. Most mosasaurs had sharp teeth for grasping slippery fish and piercing flesh and were sometimes used for breaking shells. Globidens' round teeth were designed especially for crushing armored animals like ammonites, turtles, nautilae, and bivalves. The jaws were robust and powerful, similar to Prognathodon and Platecarpus and as with most mosasaurs, the body was streamlines with flippers and a laterally flattened tail. Globidens grew to round 6 meters (20 ft) and is believed to have been a durophagous predator as its teeth are designed for crushing rather than piercing or tearing.
