Pyrite Metacanthina Trilobite from Morocco

$330.00

Description

This specimen is quite unique. Whilst pyritized ammonites, bivalves and brachioods are commonly known, rarely do you hear about pyrite trilobites. This semi-prone trilobite is an absolute gem; not only is it magnificently preserved, there are high levels of chalcopyrite in the shell during the fossilisation process. Thus during preparation a golden hue naturally occurs. This wonderful Metacanthina trilobite is truly one of a kind; the eyes are finely detailed and both genial spines are intact too. Peripheral thoracic and pygidial spines are in good shape and the pygidial margin spines have been preserved particularly well. This trilobite is in perfect condition with no defects or repairs, 100% natural, perfect for an intermediate or advanced collector.

Trilobites (meaning “three lobes”) are a group of extinct marine arthropods that lived in the Palaeozoic Era. They first appeared during the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (521 million years ago) and throughout the lower Palaeozoic. Their numbers began to slowly decline during the Silurian period until all trilobite orders, except the Proetids, died out during the Devonian period. Trilobites were widely dispersed throughout the world’s oceans and had many different lifestyles; some were predators and scavengers while others were filter feeders and lived off plankton. Currently there are approximately 17,000 species known, with many more still waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, trilobites did not survive the Permian-Triassic extinction, where 95% of all life on Earth went extinct.
