Knightia is an extinct genus of clupeid clupeiform bony fish that lived in the fresh water lakes and rivers of North America during the Eocene epoch of the Palaeogene Period (55.8 million years ago). It is the state fossil of Wyoming and is also the most excavated fossil fish in the world. Knightia belongs in the same taxonomic family as herrings and sardines but there were two species. Knightia eocaena could grow to 25 centimetres (10”) whereas Knightia alta was shorter and wider; only growing up to 6 to 10 centimetres (4”).
